Joint Statement – Calling Upon the Government of the Maldives to Uphold Democratic Values

We express deep concern over President Yameen’s refusal to abide by the Supreme Court Order thereby weakening the democratic governance of the country. It is imperative that all relevant authorities uphold the constitution and the rule of law.
We are deeply concerned that the government’s refusal to uphold the rule of law could escalate to unrest and violence across the country.
Attempts to undermine the constitution, restrain freedoms, fundamental human rights, free flow of information cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. These are fundamental principles of democracy that need to be safeguarded.

In this regard,
-We call on the government to respect and abide by the Supreme Court ruling thereby to release the political politically convicted leaders and political prisoners immediately and to reinstate the elected members of the parliament.
-We believe that the freedom of expression is fundamental for democracy to thrive and we further call upon the government to uphold this fundamental freedom.
-We call on the international community to impress on the government of the Maldives to abide by the ruling and uphold the rule of law and protect the civil and political rights of the people.
